25. Sita, Lava & KushaSita, the bow & a new alliance
In Mithila, a great bow stands between a gathering of princes and a marriage that will connect two royal households.
Rama is a prince of Ayodhya. These early chapters introduce his family, his first journeys and Sita, who becomes his wife.
Who’s who in this chapter
- Sita
- Rama’s wife and Janaka’s daughter; abducted by Ravana during the exile.
- Rama
- A prince of Ayodhya, sent into exile for fourteen years.
- Janaka
- King of Mithila and Sita’s father.
- Lakshmana
- Rama’s brother, who accompanies him into exile.
- Parashurama
- A warrior-sage who challenges Rama after the bow episode.
Janaka’s challenge
Sita’s father, King Janaka, had connected her marriage with the ability to string Shiva’s mighty bow. The weapon was no ordinary object brought out for a casual display. Its weight and reputation made it a demanding public test. Rama arrived with Lakshmana and Vishvamitra, still travelling from the duties that had first taken him away from Ayodhya. The journey now placed him in another court, before another kind of responsibility.
The sound that changes the gathering
Rama lifted the bow and began to string it. The bow broke. The test had been completed in a way that made his strength unmistakable, and Sita’s marriage to Rama could proceed. The connection between the households extended through the marriages of the brothers as well. What had begun as a journey to protect a sacrifice became a set of relationships that would shape the rest of their lives.
One last challenge on the road
The return towards Ayodhya brought an encounter with Parashurama, who challenged Rama before recognising his power. The episode placed the young prince beside an older, formidable figure associated with a different history of warrior authority. By the time Rama returned home, he had not only demonstrated skill. He had gained a wife, new family bonds and a public standing beyond his father’s court. The palace could welcome him back, but it was receiving someone whose world had already grown larger.
