An old bird sees what is happening and intervenes. He cannot stop the abduction, but he can keep the truth from vanishing with it.
Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana are living in the forest, away from their home in Ayodhya, during a fourteen-year exile.
Who’s who in this chapter
- Jatayu
- An elderly bird who tries to stop Sita’s abduction.
- Ravana
- King of Lanka, who abducts Sita.
- Rama
- A prince of Ayodhya, sent into exile for fourteen years.
- Lakshmana
- Rama’s brother, who accompanies him into exile.
- Kabandha
- A forest being whose release helps point the brothers towards an ally.
A fight against a stronger opponent
Jatayu challenged Ravana as he carried Sita away. The attempt placed him against an enemy with far greater power, but the difference did not make him stand aside. He fought to protect her and was mortally wounded. His intervention did not produce the rescue the moment needed. It still changed the path of the search by leaving someone who knew what had happened.
The brothers find a witness
Rama and Lakshmana later found Jatayu. In the middle of their uncertainty, his account supplied vital information about Sita’s abductor. The meeting also brought grief: the help had cost him his life. Rama honoured him with funeral rites. The story pauses to recognise the helper as more than a useful source of facts. His effort mattered both because of what it revealed and because of what he had chosen to risk.
One clue leads towards another
The search continued through encounters beyond the royal world. Kabandha directed the brothers towards Sugriva, setting them on a path that would bring new allies. The route did not emerge as a complete map handed to Rama at the beginning. It formed through acts of attention, help and trust. Jatayu had been unable to bring Sita back, but the truth he preserved would become part of the chain that eventually made reaching her possible.
